North Anston based Thornberry Animal Sanctuary has issued an urgent appeal for donations.  It has announced that unless it secures additional funds over the next few weeks, it may have to close its doors to new arrivals and putting the future of  its rescued resident animals at risk.

Each year the sanctuary takes in more than 500 abandoned or neglected animals, from dogs, cats, rabbits, budgies and ferrets to horses, pigs and goats.  But the current economic climate has taken its toll, resulting in a decline in charitable donations, increased bills and more animals than ever finding their way to the Sanctuary as the ‘squeeze’ hits their owners. 

Sue McNeela, Chair of the Trustees, said: “Thornberry Animal Sanctuary is a small independent Sanctuary that has been rescuing and re-homing animals since 1988, Thornberry does NOT receive any funding other than what is raised by ourselves through the ingenuity and tireless efforts of our volunteers plus the many members of the public who donate, fundraise and remember us in their will. Over the last year or so we have noticed a sharp decline in donations and a steady increase in running costs, so much so that we can honestly say we are fast approaching dire straights.  Many people are abandoning their animals through no fault of their own or left tied to the gates or worse, as in Izzy’s case just dumped and left to run into the road. In the last 12 weeks alone, we have taken in 70 dogs and 62 cats.  Kitten season is also just around the corner and unless we secure much needed funds, we might have to turn animals away.” 

Thornberry is the only horse sanctuary in this area and it is this aspect of our operation that puts the greatest strain on our resources. Costing over £1000 per week in feed alone.

With running costs of around £40,000 plus each month, the sanctuary is appealing for donations and volunteers to help boost its funds to ensure it can continue its good work. It has always been our aim to seek affiliation with local and national business in order to maintain a sustainable income and broaden our client base. Our ONLY funding is from the generosity of YOU, our supporters. No Local Authority or Government handout!

Today, being the First Day of Spring seems to be a good time to launch our Annual Appeal for Major Funding. this year the influx of new four legged guests is stretching our resources immensely, pre-loved animals being abandoned or returned due to their owners having lost their homes or ability to provide for them.

As in previous years there is always more month than money. In order to continue rescuing the neglected and abandoned four legged friends we need to appeal for your help. YOUR every donation will help our battle
 
Alongside the agreed sale of our surplus farm house, (WE ARE KEEPING ALL THE STABLES FOR ONGOING USE) we are also hoping to attract a major corporate sponsor this year. Watch This Space. (ab)

Thornberry is a small independent sanctuary that has been taking care of abandoned and neglected animals in the South Yorkshire region since 1988. We pride ourselves on our NO-KILL policy, which means that the animals in our care stay with us for as long as it takes to find them their forever homes.

We are dedicated to animal welfare and committed to being actively involved with local schools and community groups to encourage and inform, often through mutual visits, which can lead to firm friendship and support on lots of different levels from volunteering to fundraising to sponsorship and beyond.

Our funding comes solely from public donations and we hold weekly bric-a-brac sales to maintain our high standard of care and quality.  Donations for these sales and for our Ebay shop, are always welcome. We also have an excellent weekend cafe, where families can enjoy a full meal or just a snack and both provide a pleasant environment to pass the time of day in. We also hold a lot of events on site to boost our funds: check out the news and events page for information. Periodically, you will find some of us in a city centre near you having a collection, so please come up and say hello.  

Thornberry offers support, compassion and understanding and will continue to do so, for while there are animals in need, Thornberrys' gates will always be open for them.
